FOUN1014: Critical Reading and Writing – For Science and Technology and Medical Sciences The lessons that I learned from writing the Scientific Research Paper (SRP) When I first began the process ... of writing the Scientific Research Paper (SRP), I felt as though the small vision and clarity I had for writing; in which I thought my original blindness and fogginess within my mind had forever left me, was still there and it felt as though it was getting denser. “Apparently, we have become such a hyper-individualized culture that it is impossible to develop an argument based on how individual cases fit into the fabric of the common good” (Brooks, 2014, para.13). This quote form the first critical engagement activity, has helped me to understand that being self – centered will not help me to accomplish the massive task of writing the SRP and only with the use of teamwork, would this massive task be properly completed. The two lessons that I learned about critical reading and writing, while I prepared the SRP were how to generate ideas and narrow my focus based on a specific topic, and how to proofread and edit the information. A significant issue that I didn’t address in previous writing was my ability to properly generate ideas for a topic and how to develop a narrowed topic; not only for writings done before I started writing the SRP, also while I helped write the SRP. This realization may have important relevance for two reasons. First it implies that my previous method for the process of ideation, in which I created ideas, then documented any information about the idea and only going through this process once, was not proper means of developing ideas for the SRP. Secondly, the development of the SRP required through planning and research of our information and my team members perspectives and strengths being brought together. This understanding is important in a number of ways. First, it has demonstrated to me that writing is not a mindless process, but one that required me to repeatedly create, expound and develop ideas for the SRP. Secondly, in order for my group members and I to generate ideas, previous readings needed to be done in order for us to gain ideas related to our topic, which was done via the reading of the stimulus passages and other research papers.
