Emery Lowden 3.07 Forestry Lab Dec 12, 2019 EDIT: CHANGES MADE ARE BOLDED PURPOSE The Purpose of this lab is to calculate the amount of carbon a tree absorbs to find out if it could be ... the answer to the climate change problem. Southern Pine: height= 76.08 feet diameter= 9.80 inches = 0.8167 feet 1. circumference = 30.78 C= ?D D= 9.80 inches 6. Root weight: .2 * (GW = 1333.5 lbs.) = 266.7 lbs. 7. TGW = 1333.5 + 266.7 = 1600.2 lbs DW = .3555 * 1600. 2 = 568.87 lbs 8. Carbon = .5 * 568.87 lbs = 284.435 lbs. 9. Molar mass C = 12 grams per mole / CO2 = 12 + 16(2) grams per mole = x lbs of carbon / 284.435 lbs of CO2 = 77.57 lbs of carbon 10. 77.57 lbs CO2 / 20 lbs CO2 / gallons of gas = 3.88 gallons of gas Reflection questions: 1. The average household in the United States uses about 1,200 gallons of gasoline each year. How many trees similar to your tree would be needed to sequester the carbon dioxide produced by burning that much gasoline? Show your calculations with your answer. 2. Every year your tree will absorb more carbon to make its trunk larger, expand its root system, to grow more leaves (needles) and to produce pine cones and seeds for reproduction. What happens to the carbon that is stored in the needles and pinecones when they decompose on the ground? 3. If your tree is struck by lightning and burns, what happens to the carbon that is stored in the tree? 4. Write the balanced overall chemical equation for the process by which your tree absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. What is this process called? 5. Define the following terms: model, sequester, combustion, and stoichiometry. MODEL= SEQUESTER= COMBUSTION= STOICHIOMETRY= 6. In this activity, a mathematical model was used. How do you think the U.S. Forest Service developed this model? How could the accuracy of the model be checked? 7. What is an advantage of using a mathematical model? What is a disadvantage? 8. Hurricane paths are predicted by mathematical models. What is your experience with the accuracy of the hurricane models? CONCLUSION: In conclusion, theof the collection of data and application of that data through math equations to find the amount of carbon a tree absorbs. I first had to measure the tree and use and equation to find its height, then I had to use equations to find out the amount of carbon it was absorbing. Edit [Show More]
