Such challenging interactions can happen between friends, family members, coworkers, and even strangers. Often times, when an individual is faced with a discussion or encounter that feels threatening in some manner, he or she will begin to find ways to defend him or herself in order to avoid anxiety. When people do this, they are utilizing defense mechanisms. A defense mechanism is defined as an unconscious personality reaction that is triggered to avoid conscious angst or discord (Burger, 2019). There are many types of defense mechanisms that a person can utilize in any situation. The different forms of these mechanisms are denial, displacement, regression, sublimation, reaction formation, rationalization, projection, suppression,and repression (Gross, et al., 2018). Although some defense mechanisms can be viewed as unhealthy, they can be very adaptive and vital for a human to function normally.Defense mechanisms are relevant to personality psychology because they protect individuals from being overtaken by anxiety, they control the expression of improper inclinations, and they often function on an unconscious level.
