C304 Professional Roles and Values T Professional Nursing Practice C304 Professional Roles and Values Task 1 WGU Professional Nursing Practice A. There is one nursing theory that all nurses who practice today use so frequently that they would probably think that it has always been a part of nursing practice. Dr. Madeleine Leiningers theory of Transcultural Nursing was developed in the 1950s but only published in 1990 (Madeleine Leininger - Nursing Theorist, 2016). Nurses use this theory every day. It is unthinkable in healthcare today to implement a plan of care without consideration for the patients culture. Transcultural nursing is a basic consideration in planning care for any patient in my facility. Cultural considerations are made for all aspects of the patients care; nutritional, spiritual, visitation and end of life to name a few. B. Florence Nightingale is considered the first nursing theorist. Elements of her Environment Theory remain unchanged until now. It established the nurses role to be that of modifying the patients environment to create optimal conditions for the patients body to heal itself. The environment included; fresh air, pure water, sufficient food and cleanliness (Enviornmental Theory, 2016) Linda Richards was the United States first trained nurse. She was instrumental in starting many nursing schools here in the U.S. and one in Japan. She was not content to just train nurses, she wanted educated nurses. She spent the majority of her life improving nursing schools.
