Interview Techniques Positive interview techniques are important to not only the communication process between the clinician and the patient, but also to the caregiver patient relationship groundwork being established. The comprehensive health assessment is meant to provide the patient with a secure and safe environment where there concerns and issues can be heard and empathized with. No matter the urgency of the patients condition, all visits should meet the same set of standards where this is concerned. The first technique I used in my interview process was to introduce myself and build rapport with my patient. This is an important step as it sets the tone for the encounter as a whole and makes the patient feel more secure in opening up. Anyone who is present should introduce themselves and specify their relationship to the patient. “In non-urgent situations, positive remarks about nonmedical issues such as the weather, generalities about the day, or non-specific encouraging observations can help build rapport.†(Hashim, 2017) The interview should start with open ended questions that allow the patient to share and express any concerns or issues and fosters patient centered care.
