People are born with different body types, forms of self-expression, personalities, races, ethnicities, and most importantly, cultures. Our culture is what sets us apart from our neighbor. So, what is culture, and how does it impact the way we interact with one another? Does individual culture separate us from one another or unite us as a human race? According to the Cambridge definition, culture is literally defined as a ‘way of life. (Cambridge, n.d.). If culture is defined as a way of life, then all of our ways of life are completely different in their own unique way. If we apply this to the behavioral health field, then every counselor is completely different and unique, which can lead to more appreciation for other cultures in this field. Now, where to begin? I was born biologically into a mostly white family with slight Native American roots. My dads side of the family is white mixed with Native American, and my moms side of the family stems from European roots. I was raised with traditional white culture, despite the fact that my adopted brother is one-hundred percent Ethiopian. My culture is everything I was made up of, surrounded with, and everything I was exposed to as a child.
