Human Rights, and Social Work Social Workers and the LGBTQ Population and Advocacy, Internationally Social workers have historically worked with disenfranchised and marginalized groups of people. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) community comprises marginalized groups and has faced many years and forms of legalized discrimination. Social workers may have clients who are of the LGBTQ community and will need assistance with meeting their needs while also dealing with the stigma and hate they may face. The National Association of Social Work's statement is a perfect reflection of the code of ethics, which serves as our social work charge. Social workers in neighborhoods, services, and organizations are required to struggle to eradicate these disparities. We must advocate for LGBTQ clients and their community's rights because it is not just a matter of sexual preference, but federal protections and benefits afforded to same-sex and transgender relationships. While the United States has made great strides in accepting the LGBTQ community, including the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2015, we still have quite a way to go. LGBTQ communities in other countries continue to face prejudice, discrimination, violence, and oppression due to their sexual orientation.
