C228 Task 2 International Outbreak     C228 Task 2 International Outbreak (B) Description of Chosen International The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a rare and deadly disease first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola river in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ebola virus has had several outbreaks, infecting people primarily in African countries over the years since its discovery. I will be addressing the Western African epidemic, the largest epidemic of the Ebola virus outbreak in history, that started in March 2014 and lasted until June 2016. (CDC Ebola Virus Disease, 2018). The 2014 Ebola virus outbreak was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 23, 2014 as having started with cases in a rural region of Southeast Guinea, which borders Liberia and Sierra Leone. Not surprisingly, by late July 2014 cases were discovered in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The number of cases continued to steadily rise in Western Africa, and by August 2014 the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared the Western African epidemic a Public Health Emergency of International concern. From March 23, 2014 until June 2016 there were reported 28,610 confirmed Ebola cases, including 11,308 deaths in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. (MMWR, 2017). This outbreak crossed international borders, introducing the Ebola virus to six other countries and causing the largest emergency response by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the agencys history.
