This is an evaluation of the impacts an HIS has across the healthcare continuum. Patient-Centered Care Caring for patients and their families in ways that are important to, and valued by, the patient is the focus of patient-centered care. An HIS impacts this by assisting in the coordination of care and sharing of relevant clinical patient information with other clinicians. Patients provide their clinicians with critical information and that information can be shared with other clinicians as needed to facilitate treatments necessary to improve the patients health. Because the records are electronic, they can be accessed from multiple locations at the same time, and this helps to decrease wait times for treatments and referrals. The electronic record can also include patient preferences and wishes for treatments and care, giving them a consistent voice in the coordination of their care (Snyder, 2011). Quality Care To provide quality care to patients, clinicians need up to date information about the patient, their treatment preferences and their healthcare goals (cure a condition vs treatment that does not cure but improves the patients quality of life).
