Information mangament and Technology C791 task 1 Advanced Information Management and the Application of Technology Task 1 Advantages and Disadvantages There are many advantages and disadvantages to Health Information Systems (HIS) in the health care setting. Now, electronic charting is widely used however, this was not always the case. Using a HIS has advantages including real time charting, automatic health information retrieval such as past medical history and lab values, data collection, and safety. Some disadvantages include limitations of relying on the computer system, locked workstations by other users, and difficulty for those who are computer “illiterate.†This is what makes usability, interoperability, scalability and compatibility so very important. Usability refers to how easy the system is to use for staff. It should be easy for those who have had proper training to complete simple task with minimal effort. For example, The Veterans Affairs Health System uses very old charting systems called CPRS and BCMA. These systems are some of the oldest computerized medical charting systems made and makes usability very difficult. To order a medication or a lab for a patient, the provider must make 20 clicks in the chart and must know ahead of time where to look. There is no search function to bring up what you are wanting. Another system that I have used is very different and easy to use.
