It is a computer-based system that stores all the medical charts and treatment records. They are made to replace the paper charting system. Like any new technology, there are advantages and disadvantages to every new system. Advantages include being more reliable with prescriptions and retaining the health history of each patient. There is no paper chart to have to track down. It is easier and more reliable to read the prescriptions and orders. Transferring records between two hospitals is easier with HIS as all that is needed is to print and fax the information over whereas before you had to trust that the person receiving the patient can read what is written on the paper charts. HIS also compounds the information so the history can be printed on just a few facts sheets. Nurses can chart at the bedside which makes the charts more reliable. Software that gives a sepsis alert is also a huge advantage. Disadvantages would include problems with the software itself. There are glitches that can happen. Glitches can occur with any technology, but when a patient™s life depends on it, a glitch can have serious implications.
